Manual Operator Selection

The Arens Manual Range is the original form of remote window control. It provides a variety of highly reliable and efficient window winders and remote controls for windows and louvres.

When selecting which manual operator is most appropriate, the best place to start is to consider the type of window you have.

The tabs below provide a brief description of some window types that we can automate.

Window Types

Casement Windows

  • Hinges on the vertical sides and can be either inward or outward opening
  • For a casement window use the height when determining how many points of attachment are required (greater than 1200mm will require two points of attachment to the window).

Bottom Hinged Awning Windows

  • Hinges on the bottom of the window frame and are inward opening
  • For an awning window use the width when determining how many points of contact are required (greater than 1200mm will require two points of attachment to the window).

Top Hinged Awning Windows

  • Hinges are on the top of the window frame and are outward opening
  • For an awning window use the width when determining how many points of contact are required (greater than 1200mm will require two points of attachment to the window).

Louvres & Sun Blades

  • Louvres are an arrangement of horizontal slats, generally glass or aluminium.
  • Operable louvres allow for the angle of the slats to be changed to allow for air flow.
  • Operable sun blades can be vertically or horizontally arranged and allow for the angle of the slats to be changed to either let in or block out sunlight.

Casement Windows

  • Installation of a Chainhead is recommended on casement windows.
  • For windows that have a height greater than 1200mm we recommend two points of attachment to the window to meet manufacturer recommendations and avoid potential damage to the window. If you have a casement window that is greater than 1200mm high please contact us for advice.
  • To operate the chainhead you can select an MDCR, Maxi, Mini or Midi operator. Which operator you select will depend on the number of sashes you wish to open.

  • For windows greater than 1200mm wide we recommend two points of attachment to the window to meet manufacturer recommendations and avoid potential damage to the window. If you having an awning window that is greater than 1200mm wide, please contact us for advice.

Top Hinged Awning Windows

  • Installation of a Chainhead is recommended on top hinged awning windows.
  • For windows greater than 1200mm wide we recommend two points of attachment to the window to meet manufacturer recommendations and avoid potential damage to the window. If you have an awning sash greater than 1200mm wide please contact us for advice.
  • To operate the chainhead you can select an MDCR, Maxi, Mini or Midi operator. Which operator you select will depend on the number of sashes you wish to open.
  • For low level top-hinged awning windows the Arens CAT Winder with a handle can be used. If the awning is high level, a CAT winder can be installed with an eyelet and operated using an extension pole. If this is to occur an inverter bracket is required to mount the CAT winder upside down. This allows the hook on the extension pole to enter the eyelet and the CAT winder be operated by the occupant.

Louvres & Sun Blades

The manual range offers multiple solutions for operating louvres and sun blades.

  • The Arens Screw Jack is ideal for small window movements under light loading. It is a cable driven system which can be operated manually using the MDCR or Maxi operators. Alternatively, they can be electrically operated using an Arens Spindle or UCS Ulysses Actuator.
  • The Fork and Swivel is specifically designed for horizontal or vertical sun louvre blades on one or more windows. It is produced in stainless steel, making it appropriate for both internal and external installation. The Fork and Swivel can be manually operated with the MDCR or Midi operators.
  • The TA1000 Torque Arm System is ideal for operating banks of louvres. It can be operated manually using the MDCR 212 Operator or electrically with the Arens Spindle Actuator or UCS Ulysses Actuator.
